Podcaster Predicts Next US President to be Chosen by Podcasting

Here’s the list of predictions issued November, 2005 by Podcast Coach Tim ‘Gonzo’ Gordon, creator of Podcasting Adventures Online, the most comprehensive and easy-to-understand ‘how-to podcast’ program on the market.

Politics

  • Politicians and related political groups will move big time into podcasting for the 2006 mid-term elections, and even more so in the 2008 election. Podcasts will help sway the election of the next US president.
  • In the next ten years, a third-party political group such as the Libertarians or the Green Party will emerge to become a party on par with the Democrats and Republicans in size and influence, thanks in large part to the viral spread of ideas through creative podcasting.

Business

  • Small businesses will finally figure out how to use podcasting to either a) make money promoting other aspects of their business or b) charge admission to their podcast.
  • Corporations will figure out how they can use podcasts to disseminate highly specialized information to gather leads for sophisticated products.

The Internet

  • Next year’s podcasting star is a person who today doesn't even know what podcasting is.
  • Corporate podcasts will be so full of commercials that listeners will rebel and tune out, gravitating back to smaller and more independent podcasts.
  • By the year 2010, listeners will spend hundreds of dollars per year on their favorite podcasts because they perceive the information to be that valuable – but over 95% of all podcasts will remain free.
  • In spite of the proliferation of high-quality audio hardware and software available at very low cost, most amateur podcasts will still suffer from exquisitely poor audio quality - mainly due to laziness and lack of information.
  • As bandwidth increases and the video iPod gains traction, ‘vlogging,’ or video podcasting, will become very popular….but audio podcasting will still remain huge, for the same reason that radio maintained an audience as television took over the mainstream – radio is a medium that invites the imagination to take part. TV leaves nothing to the imagination. A good podcaster will exploit that advantage.
  • Podcasting will become much more organized, in that hundreds of small, independent podcasters will join forces to sell their ‘pod’ time to micro-advertisers.

Education

  • Universities and colleges will start using podcasting as a way of delivering lectures and other educational material – for a price. It won’t be uncommon to attend a class via an iPod.

Music Business

  • A new national musical star will grow to dominate the charts out of podcasting from a basement….much like American Idol has launched ‘nobodies’ into the stratosphere.
  • The RIAA will start suing podcasters for using unlicensed music…as soon as they figure out what a podcast is and how to track what songs are being played on podcasts! However, there efforts will be for naught, as most podcasters who play music are aware of licensing requirements. But that won’t stop the RIAA.
  • Musicians will finally discover podcasts as a way of promoting new music, offer coverage of behind-the-scenes stories and events, and successfully create and build new audiences – without the hassle of dealing with corporate record companies.
